Picasso has sold $12.5 billion at auction. That's the boring part.

Arthur introduces cumulative artist auction sales as a market-cap-like metric for tracking rank and momentum.

September 17, 2026By James Crichton

Add up every final price an artist has ever made at auction, the hammer plus premium — what the buyer actually paid, and you get a number nobody in this market talks about enough. Call it the artist's market cap.

It's in Arthur now. Analytics → Artist Auction Sales. Cumulative total sales, all time, ranked.

The top of the list will not shock you. Pablo Picasso at $12.5 billion. Andy Warhol at $7.8 billion. Claude Monet, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Gerhard Richter. You probably guessed all of them.

It gets interesting when you cut it. Sort by period, by nationality, by medium.

Ask who the biggest Ultra Contemporary, born after 1974, artist is by money spent. Or the biggest Korean artist. Or the biggest sculpture. Those lists are not obvious, and they are not the same list you'd get if you asked a dealer over dinner.

We give you the last five years next to the all-time figure, so you can see how much of an artist actually comes to auction each year — and whether that number is accelerating or thinning out.

The signal isn't the rank. It's the change in rank. An artist climbing twenty places in three years is being bought by more people, in more places, at higher prices. That happens before the museum show and before the critics catch up. A name sliding down is telling you something too, and earlier than anyone will say out loud.

Worth saying out loud: this market is brutally top-heavy. A small handful of names account for an enormous share of everything ever spent at auction, and the curve falls off a cliff below them. That's uncomfortable, and it's also why moving up the list at all is such a big deal.

One caveat. This is auction only — any artist with auction history. Private sales don't hit the ledger.

Look at the top of the list once. Then spend your time twenty rows down.
