Same painting, sold twice: the 5 fastest-appreciating artists

Arthur ranks artists by repeat-sales Price CAGR to show which exact works have appreciated fastest at auction

August 06, 2026By James Crichton

Most "appreciation" numbers in the art market are a bit of a magic trick. They take two different paintings by the same artist, compare the prices, and call the gap growth.

Repeat sales don't let you cheat like that. They track the exact same work selling twice at auction, so what you're looking at is the picture itself gaining value, and nothing else.

We ranked artists by the median repeat-sales Price compound annual growth rate, CAGR, across their body of work at auction. Here are the five leading the field right now.

  1. Barkley L. Hendricks — 47.3%

His full-length portraits of everyday Black Americans were overlooked for most of his career. Since his death in 2017, the market has caught up fast. One portrait sold for $48,000 at Swann, then returned to Sotheby's a decade later with an estimate north of $2 million: the same canvas, the same wall, a very different number.

  2. Martin Wong — 38.7%

The great chronicler of 1980s Lower East Side New York, largely unsung in his lifetime. A Bronx Museum retrospective and the work of his P·P·O·W-managed estate have brought a new generation of collectors to his brickwork cityscapes, and a fresh auction record fell in 2024.

  3. Shara Hughes — 35.9%

The one living mid-career name on the list. Her invented, slightly hallucinatory landscapes broke out at the 2017 Whitney Biennial, and with David Kordansky behind her, demand has outrun supply ever since.

  4. Luo Zhongli — 35.7%

His 1980 painting Father is one of the most recognized images in modern Chinese art. Decades on, his early realist canvases stay thin on the ground at auction, and each one that surfaces resets the bar.

  5. Samia Halaby — 34.4%

Now in her nineties, the Palestinian-American abstraction pioneer is finally being priced like one. A wave of museum attention and a landmark 2024 Christie's result have moved her market from overlooked to sought-after.

What the list actually tells you: four of these five are elder or posthumous artists. This isn't a list of hot new names; it's the market repricing careers it undervalued for decades. The honest metric rewards the works that were quietly right all along.
