The names collectors are fighting over

Arthur ranks Ultra Contemporary artists by total cumulative bidders to show where collector competition is strongest.

Most rankings measure money. This one measures competition.

The Baer Faxt tracks who is actually bidding at Sotheby’s, Christie’s, and Phillips, not just who wins. So we ranked Ultra Contemporary artists, born after 1974, by the number that’s hardest to fake: the total cumulative bidders that turn up to compete for their work. More bidders means more people in the room who want the same thing. That’s demand you can feel.

The Ultra Contemporary artists drawing the deepest bidding right now:

  • Tauba Auerbach — 14 bidders
  • Jonas Wood — 13
  • Adrian Ghenie — 13
  • Lynette Yiadom-Boakye — 13
  • Tim Noble & Sue Webster — 12

Why these names? Each makes work that’s instantly theirs: Auerbach’s optical, almost mathematical abstractions; Wood’s saturated interiors and still lifes; Ghenie’s dark, thickly worked history paintings; Yiadom-Boakye’s imagined portraits, now carried by a Tate retrospective; Noble & Webster’s shadow sculptures that turn piles of junk into silhouettes. A distinctive hand plus museum validation is what pulls a crowd to the paddle.

A high hammer price can come from two determined bidders. A high bidder count means the whole room wants in, a truer read on where taste is actually heading.

P.S. Watch the underbidders too. The people who just miss these lots are the ones who set the floor for the next sale.
