Nobody saw the horse coming

Arthur highlights five Contemporary auction sales that dramatically exceeded estimates in 2026.

September 03, 2026By James Crichton

Contemporary sales, artists born 1946–1974, have looked steady on the surface this year. Underneath, the estimates have been badly wrong, and the misses cluster around artists the market stopped paying close attention to.

Here are the year-to-date top five surprises at Sotheby's, Christie's and Phillips: contemporary painters and sculptors, sorted by percent over estimate.

  • Deborah Butterfield, Untitled — $409,600, over 10x estimate (Sotheby's, May 15). Her found-metal horses cast in bronze have been institutional for decades. Specialists still price her like a regional sculptor.
  • Donald Baechler, The Butterfly Flower #3 — $179,200, 924% (Sotheby's, Jul 14). He died in 2022, and estates reprice. East Village 1980s is also having a moment.
  • Peter Marino, Pair of Cabinets — $114,300, 814% (Christie's, Mar 5). The architect behind the Chanel and Dior flagships, selling as a designer. Taste crossover is something estimates never model well.
  • Dubossarsky & Vinogradov, Really Sexy — $60,960, 771% (Christie's, Feb 27). Post-Soviet painting has almost no recent comps, so estimates default low.
  • Frank Moore, Wild Blue Yonder — $107,950, 764% (Christie's, Feb 27). AIDS-era allegorical painter, died 2002. Museum attention has been building for years and the auction market hadn't caught up.

The pattern is the same in every case: thin comp history plus a shift in critical attention. That's exactly where estimates break, and where a bid gets rewarded.
